New Band Alert: The Lagoons

There is nothing like hearing a song for the first time and knowing that it has the potential to make it big. A perfect example of this is "California" by The Lagoons, an LA-based duo formed by two brothers, Joey and Ryan Selen, in 2015. "California" hit it big last year on Spotify's indie-alt playlists and landed this duo a following. The track is one of the best in a long time- combining saxophone, indie-sounding electric and chill vocals to make a beachy track reminiscent of love in the summertime. The track is stripped down and more laid back- but that does not take away from the impactfullness of it. According to their site, some primary musical influences of The Lagoons include Daft Punk, Steely Dan, Fleetwood Mac, Radiohead, Tom Petty, Dave Matthews Band, alt-J, and Zero 7. In 2016, the brothers put "California" and four other tracks on a debut EP, and are expected to release a follow-up early this year. This group has found a way to inventively mesh soul, electronic and indie pop to create a sound that is sure to win one over. We at the magazine are elated for the 2018 music to be released, but for now we will continue to blast "California" on repeat. Check out the Indie- Beach rock playlist here featuring "California"
