On a quiet Thursday, November 1st, Caroline Rose began her tour in Cambridge, MA at The Sinclair. While the usually bustling Harvard Square was quite empty that night, Rose and her opener, And The Kids, pulled in an intimate, yet high energy crowd to the venue.
The psychedelic indie rockers, And The Kids, from Northampton, MA, started the show off right. Founding members Hannah Mohan on guitar and vocals, as well as Rebecca Lasaponaro on drums, were both present, with the addition of Luke Averill on bass. The trio played songs from both of their albums, such as “Secret Makeout Factory”, “Picture”, their well-known hit “Glory, Glory”, and their newest release “2003”. As a longtime fan from the band’s hometown, this performance, in my opinion, showed the band’s growth and maturity as they take off on tour with a bigger artist.
After black drapes were taken off of the stage, revealing Caroline Rose’s red set, fans grew more excited. Everything from red boas, a giant red pencil, a mysterious red creature in the corner, a gumball machine, and of course, roses, dressed the stage to match Rose’s aesthetic. Fans toward the front of the crowd even dressed in the singer’s signature look of an all-red tracksuit, with a red sweatband.
Onstage, joined by Caroline Rose, was Abbie Morin on keys and guitar, Cassi Blum on bass and keys, and Will Morse on the drums. Onstage was also Chelsea, their fluffy stuffed tour cat. Rose told the story of how her and Abbie met, which was actually through their mutual liking of the opening band, And The Kids. The two drove from Rose’s town of Burlington, VT to see And The Kids play live across the border in Montreal, Canada.
After the first few songs, Rose shared that tonight’s setlist order thus far was originally going to be the track listing of her newest album, Loser, off of New West Records. She went on to begin the next song with a large (and red, of course) kazoo, but not knowing which end was the right one to play out of – the audience was split on the conflict as well. A highlight of the set was the band’s cover of Toxic by Britney Spears.
Summing up her set pretty well, Rose dedicated her song “Bikini” to “all [her] freaks, all [her] weirdos, and all [her] queers,” as the crowd danced the night away.
