Weezer is Back with "The Teal Album"
As of late, it seems that rock royalty Weezer have slowly been sneaking back into the music scene for a covert, yet major comeback. Their cover of Toto’s “Africa” last year reached the top spot on Billboard’s alternative chart, marking their first number one hit in ten years. Perhaps it was that demand for nostalgia-infused covers that sparked another surprise from the quartet, succumbing to their newfound identity as an internet meme. Their latest release, The Teal Album, dropped this week - and we are totally here for it.
If you’re looking for a mix of the best of the last few decades, Weezer has you covered (no pun intended). The Teal Album has compiled all those feel-good songs you’ve definitely belted out on karaoke night at some point in your life. The group time travels in a curt half hour, presenting a gritty version on Tears For Fears’ “Everybody Wants to Rule the World”, along with a punk tribute to the Turtles’ 60’s anthem “Happy Together”. Thrown in are homages to TLC (“No Scrubs”), Electric Light Orchestra (“Mr. Blue Sky”), and Black Sabbath (“Paranoid”). What would seemingly make for an eccentric tracklist flows strangely well. It’s every song you need on your party playlist—this time, simply Weezer-fied.
At this point in, it’s safe to say that Weezer is truly bringing some much-needed joy back into the world. The Teal Album, whether music or meme, is sure to put a smile on your face. For those still awaiting some original tracks, however, don’t fret - the group’s LP The Black Album is set to be released March 1. Until then, you’ve got some real grooves to hold you over.
