Pixies Bring Their Timeless Talents to The Eagles Ballroom
Alt-rock legends Pixies took their 2019 tour to Milwaukee's Eagles Ballroom (on the top floor of The infamous Rave) last Monday, and played for quite a large crowd of die-hard fans.
The night began with emerging alternative rock act Basement, who entered the ballroom with some intensely colored lighting, immediately attracting the eyes of the attendees. The British quintet had an instantaneous energy, especially lead singer Andrew Fisher. His presence certainly commanded the room, as well as his powerful and intense vocals. The group made the most of the small amount of stage they had, often dancing around and jamming with their bandmates. It is clear this group has a ton of fun performing wherever they may be. Their sound at times was nostalgic- evoking almost an early-to-mid 2000's rock vibe. Fisher's flannel shirt and beanie added to that as well. And even though most of the crowd was unfamiliar with the group, they got into them pretty quickly. Some headbanging, nodding, and full-out dancing was not left unnoticed.
After a thirty minute intermission, it became time for Pixies to take the stage. The crowd, full of eager anticipation cheered as violet lights accompanied the band's entrance to the stage. As the lights faded to a bold green, the group opened with "Gouge Away", from their 1989 album "Doolittle". The band had a very focused energy as the group clearly puts a lot of noticeable effort into making their live show not necessarily about bells and whistles, but about celebrating the raw talent they have. Lead vocalist Black Francis has incredible live vocals, and matched with the harmonies of bassist Paz Lenchantin, it creates for a stunning combination of sound. The crowd was very chill and approachable as they sang along to their favorite Pixies hits and had a relaxed, but still enjoyable time (although some air guitar did break out). The group performed over thirty of their best hits from throughout the years- including "Where Is My Mind?", "Hey", "Gigantic", and "Wave Of Mutilation". The band had a diverse setlist, performing songs from albums old and new, ideal for fans of all generations. They closed the set with the ever so fitting "Vamos". Pixies clearly hasn't lost any of their significant talent over the years, and they bring a spectacular show to whatever city they may be in that night. Certainly a band to see if you are into alternative music as this timeless band proves that their live show is not one to miss.
