Cincinnati’s Friday Giants released their second EP, Something Worth Saving, on June 7. The band has a new lineup which consists of Zac Taylor, Chuck Ralenkotter, and Logan Boatright. This release follows up an eventful 2018, which included performances at Cincinnati’s Bunbury Music Festival and a spot on the Vans Warped Tour in July.
Friday Giants use an upbeat sound to convey an important message with this release. Something Worth Saving opens with “Persistence,” a track which seeks to remind the listener that life isn’t always easy, but the upheavals are minor inconveniences when you consider all the great things that happen. Using a roller coaster to get this message across, they share that now is not the time to give up.
“Persistence” flows into the title track well. Though ambiguous with its meaning, lyrics like “another Friday night under the bright lights, I can hear them singing along” portray the possible struggle that may have come from the band’s recent lineup change. It’s another reminder to stay persistent, especially with lyrics like “too early in the game to count us out.” Even with the struggles they’ve faced, Friday Giants remind their fans, and each other, that they’re in it for the long haul. Giving up is not the option that they will be taking.
“Anything But You,” is a metal inspired anthem about not selling yourself short. Manipulation shouldn’t sway anyone into being anything but themselves. The fourth song, “Flatline,” shares a message most hope to never experience. While we may not all have had to deal with the physical death of someone close to us, we have all watched someone lose everything. With lyrics like “I can’t watch, but how can I just look away,” one can’t help but feel the pain of watching someone spiral. Thus leaving us with the guilt of not being able to do more.
The EP closes with “Carolina,” an emotional song about letting go in a relationship. Long distance is hard, when depression comes into play, it can become overwhelming. While you may be grateful for how that person has made you feel, it’s not enough to get you through. Depression can destroy the strongest foundation in a relationship. Even when you’re right next to the one you love, they can feel alone because you aren’t there emotionally. There’s a point where you have to do what’s best and not let your partner suffer while you struggle. All of these feelings are portrayed well in Friday Giants’ newest release. An emotional ending to an excellent EP.

The “something worth saving,” is of course, you. Don’t allow the world to change you into something you are not. Something Worth Saving is Friday Giants’ memoir; it proves that they’re here to stay, despite the hurdles life has thrown at them.
