The Unlikely Candidates Talk Touring and New Music

The Unlikely Candidates, an alternative rock band rising on the charts from Fort Worth, Texas, has been on tour with fan favorites of The Goo Goo Dolls, Marianas Trench, The Score, along with multiple headlining dates across the United States since August. On top of touring, they released a song called "Novocaine," which currently is just under seven million streams on Spotify. I had a chance to chat with The Unlikely Candidates about "Novocaine" and their current touring schedule! Continue reading to learn more!

GMAT: Hi! Introduce us to The Unlikely Candidates!

TUC: Nice to meet ya! Kyle Morris sings, Cole Male plays guitar, Kevin Goddard plays drums, Brent Carney plays lead guitar and Jared Hornbeek plays bass. We're an alt-rock band out of Fort Worth, TX. We've been touring for the better part of 7 years now!

GMAT: Your most recent song “Novocaine” is stuck in my head on repeat! Give the GMAT readers a deeper look into the song.

TUC: The song is basically a slackers anthem about half lamenting and half celebrating the lazy pizza stained Netflix binging life that I think that we are all drawn to occasionally. It's also about working 9 to 5 and pay check to pay check feeling like you are a little stuck.

GMAT: What was the process behind creating the lyric video for “Novocaine”?

TUC: We needed to do something fun on a minimal budget. Growing up we had all been fans of King Of The Hill. The idea really was based off that TV show's intro. So we invited a bunch of our friends out to the bar for drinks and pizza and the finished product seemed to work!

GMAT: You’ve been touring for about a month now. What is it like being on the road performing headlining shows and opening for Marianas Trench?

TUC: We recently went back into a van after a few years of touring in an RV. Things are quite cramped in there. We are back to practically sleeping on top of each other yet somehow we power through and make it work. Getting on stage every night and playing music to our fans and new fans makes it all worthwhile. The Marianas Trench tour was so amazing! Those guys were super nice and welcoming and their fans were the same. We loved every night of that tour. We would go back out with them in a heartbeat if given the opportunity.

GMAT: You are also opening up for The Goo Goo Dolls in late October/early November, what are you most excited for during that stretch of shows?

TUC: I think we are most excited about meeting the guys in the band. We all grew up in the 90's, and the Goo Goo Dolls are literally living rock legends, grew up listening to their hits on the radio in DFW. We are really looking forward to playing these gigantic venues in a lot of our favorite cities, should be a good time!

GMAT: Do you have any funny show stories to share?

TUC: Kyle once got a microphone cable stuck in his hair. It was so tangled up we had to cut the mic cable.

GMAT: Between touring and releasing new music in 2019, what is the most important piece of advice you have learned and are willing to share with emerging artists?

TUC: Sounds really cliche, but never give up. You're going to doubt yourself and want to quit a million times over, but finding something you're passionate about is what life is all about. Every day is a learning process!

GMAT: Can you believe it’s almost 2020? What exciting things do The Unlikely Candidates have planned for the new year?

TUC: Dang, that makes me feel old... lol. We are really looking forward to a long year of touring and hopefully an LP is somewhere along the horizon. We will just have to wait and see but so far 2020 looks promising.

GMAT: Is there anything else you would like to tell us?

TUC: Come says what's up at a show! We will be on the road with The Goo Goo Dolls October 25 to November 6 and immediately following that, with the The Score on November 7 to the 17.
