Greyson Chances Returns to Boston on The Portraits World Tour

In the midst of a world tour, just having visited Asia, Europe, and The UK, Oklahoma native Greyson Chance has returned to the USA and played Boston, MA on November 10th.

Having last visited the Boston area in March, right after the release of his album portraits, Chance practically sold out the Brighton Music Hall with fans from all walks of life. Kids with their parents, couples in love, and BFFs all gathered into the small club on a Sunday night.

Fans pushed against the barricade, which was lined with rainbow flags, cowboy hats, and beaming smiles - all very on-brand for Greyson.

Chance ran out onto the stage after an instrumental intro played overhead, and began with a personal favorite of mine: “west texas." Following with “bleed you still” and “seasons nineteen," all off of portraits, the night was off to an amazing start. Greyson played a new, unreleased song, “Overloved," solo on the keys, slowing the pace of the show from his danceable hits, to his tear-inducing ballads.

Speaking of which, before his 2018 single “Good As Gold," Chance spoke to the crowd on his personal journey writing the song. Over the beginning chords of the song, Chance explained “This song has helped me so much on days that I’m not feeling the best, days I’m not feeling strong enough to do what I do, and I hope it’s done the same for you.” And with that, misty eyes spread throughout the crowd. Acknowledging he made a similar point at the previous Boston show, Chance reiterated the importance of not caring about Instagram likes or followers and to “seek validation within loving yourself, within loving your friends, within loving your family, within supporting and loving your community…”

After a brief outfit change, Greyson returned to the stage in platform Doc Marten boots and jumped into the seductive, danceable, “black on black." Later on, Greyson pulled a fan onto stage, truly showing his appreciation for those who have supported him over his 10 year career. Taking her pink cowboy hat, he sang a few lines of Lady Gaga’s “A Million Reasons” to her and took a photo. Following that, fittingly with the cowboy hat and platform Docs, was his newest single, “Boots." With a devilish grin, Chance dedicated the song to “all the fake f*cking cowboys runnin’ around.”

After leaving the stage, and returning for an encore in one last, more simplified outfit, Greyson ended the night with “white roses”. Open, honest, and humble with the audience, he told the story of losing his record deal, giving up on music, returning to Oklahoma, and starting college. With more reflection, he played a few chords of Lady Gaga’s “Paparazzi," then quickly chuckled, “There’s not enough money in the world…”

With the entire room jumping and dancing to the finale of the show, Chance promises to return to Boston in 2020 - and I for one, will definitely be there again.
