Matt Maeson's 'The Day You Departed Tour'
Last month Matt Maeson and Moby Rich visited Phoenix, Arizona on 'The Day You Departed Tour.' This sold out show at the Crescent Ballroom gave fans a night to remember.
Getting the night started was Moby Rich, a melancholic pop two-piece from Los Angeles. Moby Rich walked on to the stage with an audio clip from the beloved Stepbrothers movie, making everyone in the crowd laugh.
"I know you touched my drum set," the audio clip said.
Before they played their song "Pocket," they asked the crowd to cheer if they had ever had their hearts broken. The crowd cheered loud and clear. They also played a song called "Currents," a song about doing what you want to do and being who you want to be without hurting anybody. The crowd really loved that song. Fans loved Moby Rich even more when they covered Lizzo's "Truth Hurts." Everyone was dancing and singing along to the hit self-love anthem. They closed out their set with the first song that they ever released, "Yoko Ono" which was featured on Netflix show Atypical.
Matt Maeson, an alternative artist from Virginia took the stage after Moby Rich. He explained about how it was nice to be back in Phoenix when it wasn't "hot as f*ck."
Maeson played his song "Feel Good," which he started writing in 2010. He forgot about it, found it years later in an email. Then, it ended up being on his debut album. He even told the crowd about his roots of driving across the country in a Hyundai Elantra and that he likes to "throw it back" by playing "Cliffy," which is about a guy he lived in a trailer with.
All of his songs have deep meanings and back stories behind them. His stories kept the crowd invested in the show. He started writing at SXSW after his first tour. When he had been drinking and driving, he ended up going back to his hotel (a camper behind someone's house) and pulled out a guitar and wrote "Beggar's Song." This song is a prayer to him. The audience connected with this song by swaying and singing along.
After that, he played "Go Easy,"which got the crowd very hype and brought the energy right back up for his next big surprise. He brought out Technicolor's lead singer Brennan Smiley for a cover of The Killers' song "When We Were Young." Maeson then closed out the night with the fan favorite song "Hallucinogenics."
